Assoc Prof N. J. Wildberger (UNSW Australia) - An introduction and invitation to hypergroups, with connections to random walks, group theory and geometry.

Abstract: Hypergroups are interesting variants of groups that were introduced about 50 years ago by Jewitt, Dunkl and Spector. They go back historically to Frobenius' early work on characters and representations of finite groups,
and connect naturally to probabilistic questions about random walks, geometrical structure and analysis on homogeneous spaces and Fusion rule algebras studied by physicists.
In this talk I will give an introduction to this subject, showing that it is an interesting avenue for research which ought to be developed more. We will concentrate on commutative hypergroups and their character theory.
